Google Gemini Adds Personalization From Past Chats

Introduction to Gemini Updates

Google is rolling out updates to the Gemini app that aim to enhance user experience through personalized responses and improved privacy controls. The updates, which start today, will be expanded over the coming weeks to all users.

What’s New in Gemini

The latest updates to the Gemini app are designed to make interactions more personalized and private.

Personalization From Past Chats

Gemini now has the ability to reference earlier chats, recalling details and preferences to make responses feel more collaborative and contextually aware. This update aligns with Google’s vision for an assistant that learns and understands the user over time. Users can control this feature by navigating to Settings > Personal context > Your past chats with Gemini, where they can choose to turn it off if desired.

Temporary Chats

For conversations that users do not want to influence future chats, Google has introduced a Temporary Chat mode. Temporary chats do not appear in recent chats, are not used to personalize or train models, and are kept for up to 72 hours. This feature is particularly useful for sensitive or one-off conversations that should not affect the app’s understanding of the user’s preferences or context.

Updated Privacy Controls

Google is also renaming the "Gemini Apps Activity" setting to "Keep Activity" in the coming weeks. When this setting is enabled, a sample of future uploads may be used to improve Google services. Users who currently have the Gemini Apps Activity setting turned off will find that Keep Activity remains off, and they can choose to turn it off at any time or use Temporary Chats for additional privacy.

Why These Updates Matter

The introduction of personalized responses and Temporary Chats significantly enhances the usability and privacy of the Gemini app. Personalized responses reduce the need for repetitive context-setting, making interactions more efficient. Temporary Chats provide a secure way to keep sensitive information separate from the main context, which is especially beneficial for teams working with client-sensitive workflows. Both features are designed with privacy in mind, offering controls that meet the requirements for handling sensitive information.

Availability of Updates

The personalization setting begins rolling out today on Gemini 2.5 Pro in select countries, with plans to expand to Gemini 2.5 Flash and more regions in the coming weeks. This phased rollout ensures that users can gradually experience the enhanced features of the Gemini app.

Conclusion

The updates to the Gemini app represent a significant step forward in AI-assisted interactions, focusing on personalization, privacy, and user control. By allowing the app to learn from past conversations and introducing Temporary Chats, Google aims to provide a more intuitive and secure experience for its users. As these updates become available to a wider audience, users can expect a more tailored and private interaction with the Gemini app, enhancing overall usability and trust in the technology.
